(ATM) "Elutriating" grit's

How exactly do you "elutrate" a grit. I imagine the process is:

1. Mix grit with water to make a slurry.

2. Let mixture settle somewhat so that the largest particles have sedimented from the slurry.

3. Pour off the top and middle part of the slurry into a separate container leaving the big particles in the first container.

4. Let the slurry in the second container separate and then pour off the clear water on top. Drain the rest of the mixture onto filter paper and let dry in a clean, dust free environment.

Would this work, or is my guess way off?
