A 15 inch tube is identical to the fuselage in an experimental aircraft..
Same requirements: Light/strong/rigid... The pinnacle of this structure is
the geodetic method referrred to as a Geo-Spiral....
To do this you need strips of material... Wood/F'glass/etc. You need a form
to wind the strips on... i.e. a tube of some sort... Doesn't need to be
particularly strong as it is just a workpiece... This form is removed
afterwards... You start by winding one strip in a spiral, along the form...
Say a right hand spiral to begin with...Then, over top of this you wind a
spiral the other direction... We will call this a left hand spiral...Where
the strips of the second winding pass across the strips of the first winding,
you screw/glue/bolt/whatever them together... Whne you are finished you
remove the form and you are left with something that resembles a basket weave
tube.... Very strong/rigid/light... Voila... :>)
