(ATM) 12 micron woes

My mirror grinding has been going much better than expected. Then I went to the 12 micron lapping powder supplied with my William and Bell 8 inch pyrex blank kit. Scratches! Backed up, ground them out and tried again. Scratches!. Some quite nasty. I think I am goint to skip to the 5 micron and see if they reappear. This should tell me if I am just having a problem with using the finer grits or if the stuff is contaminated.

Any thing you might think of that I could inadvertantly be doing?
