Steve:
I have just been dreaming of the same problem. The solution I am up to at
this point is to cut a curved tool from plywood. I am thinking of a 12.5"
f/8, so I would use a router on a 200" arm to cut the proper curve. Then I
would rough form plaster, and then use the tool to form it, either by
rotating the tool ( maybe in a drill press at 1 rpm?) or perhaps better, put
the plaster mold on a rotating spindle, and use the plywood tool to form it
as it dries. Finally, I imagine casting a tool, and then grinding the tool
against the mold a little to make them more spherical. Add tiles, and give
it a try.
You know, this forum is great! I have just been thinking about this
very problem, and making up my own answers (I discarded the idea of
spin-casting the mold, and the 16' weather balloon idea mercifily died as
swiftly as it was spawned) mostly because I am already thinking about the 25"
f/4, but I'm not sure I would have ever asked. But tonight, here's the
thread! I'm no tsure if what I'm thinking of will work -- it seems like it
should, but then again, what do I know? Now maybe I'll get to find out
without having to try it all out. Any feedback would be most appreciated.
Take care, Peter Augello
