atm Final figuring with full size lap - minimizing effect

When you get to the point in final figuring where you want the changes to be quite subtle (< 1/10 wave?), what procedure is used? One time around the mirror is, I assume, the minimum. Do you try to lift the top element as you are polishing, take very few strokes, use a very watery polishing mixture or something else? Thanks. (I am at this stage with an 8" mirror).
