It is my opinion that there are very few materials that would be superior to wood as far as stability goes in maintaining allignment or in equalization of optics and tube materials in temperature. In general, wood is the most common material in use in construction of amateur telescopes...and MANY if not most larger aperture Newtonians.
The larger scopes generally have some sort of truss structure to maintain a lower center of gravity to keep the height of the mount as low as possible, but even these generally have wooden "mirror boxes".
