Thanks for all who replied to my earlier post.  I eventually went with 
liquid nails.  I roughed up one side of the aluminium with sandpaper and 
clamped it for 5 days before I touched it.  Seems to have worked well.  Join 
is a matching diagonal to avoid a "bump".
