Re: [ATM] Scratches keep forming on edge of mirror

My thanks to everyone for their advice. I have gone
to the hardware store to get the materials to
implement what has been said. I've got the joint
compound to fill in the channels, then I will seal the
tool (channels, side and bottom) with resin.

I will smooth the bevels with finer grit. (Up to now
I had only used the course side of a course/fine
oilstone). I will use the fine side of the stone, and
compare that with using a sanding block with 400 grit
sandpaper (the finest they sold at Lowes). I will
look for a nearly polished bevel.

One thing I also noticed was that some of my tiles are
cut into triangles with three sides instead of usual
four. When I ran my finger over the most acute angle
of the triangle, it felt like a sharp point compared
to other tile edges, even though the tile was beveled.
I will have to try to blunt down this point on the
tile. I also noticed that some of the outside tiles
were very shiny compared to the rest of the tiles.
This seems to indicate they were under a lot of
pressure (probably since the mirror was an oblate
spheroid with the outer edge being a high spot). On
those shiny tiles, I saw scratches; where the tiles
were not shiny, I did not see scratches.

My hunch after all these discussions is that it is
probably going to be the smoother, fine grit bevels
that will solve the trouble with the edge scratches,
and that the sealing and channel hole filling will
save me from finer scratches later on down the road.

Thank you all for your help,

Adam Krause
