The light source is not relevant. It can be anything you desire
it to be as long as it provides enouhjg light for the job. You
can also have too much light!
The ball makes a nice point source of light so using it is nice.
The slit can only be used if the detecting is done with a KE. or
Ronchi grating and that needs to be aligned to the slit.
I assume that you're doing a null test ala Offner, Ross or other
such test. If yoooou're doing an artificial star, the ball is a
very good idea as it provides a nice point source from sunlight
at almost any angle as long as the sun is behind you.
