Just for clarity Don, it should be mentioned that the frame should be
glass or a low expansion metal and has to be lapped *optically* flat,
not nailed together from 2x4's :)

If the light in the original posters setup is following the same path
on the outgoing and return trips then I'm at a loss to see how a cube
beamsplitter could introduce any aberrations, but then I'm more used
to interferometry setups than focault.
