I've once made a simple equatorial mount with copper/brass water pipes. If
you go to the building market you will find all kinds of brass parts wich
will in some cases have a sliding fit. Just find the right combo and solder
it to the copper pipes.

Motion is very smooth, and for not too high magnification it works well. I
stopped with it when I could acquire a used vixen polaris mount.
