Re: [ATM] Gluing aluminium to Wood

There have been a lot of suggestions on this one...that's always a good
thing...I will second or thrid for that matter the use of epoxies,
polyurethane adhesives (gorrilla glue being an over priced brand name of),
construction adhesives (such as liquid nails, but to be sure not the only
variety), and even acetate (super glue) to some extent. Though i have never
used any of these adhesives to do what you are describing...i work in the
theatre and am always tasked with making the
impossible/magical/who-the-hell-thought-this-was-a-good-idea? kind of
stuff...I can say that no matter what glue you use it will perform well if
you follow a few simple rules...

1- rough both surfaces with sandpaper first...especially smooth ones like
machined aluminium.

2- always glue to the cleanest surface possibly imaginable...i suggest
acetone as a gack remover after blowing or brushing to remove dust from
sanding.

3- if the glue requires more than one part and needs mixing before
applying...mix the living hell out it...mix it as much as you think it needs
mixed and then mix that much again....within the working time of the glue of
course.

4- adhesives are all about surface area...get as even a coating of glue on
as much of the material as humanly possible.

5- clamp it and forget about it...patience is a virtue with glue...curiosity
killed the glue project...don't touch it...don't even think about it until
well after the manufacturers set time requirements. (i like to glue stuff
before bed so i'm not even tempted to mess with it)

in my experience most adhesives work as well or better than expected if
these simple rules are followed....

what ever glue you use...good luck
