Yes, it's possible it could, but only for portions of the mirror that 
are not obstructed by parts of the cell or test stand.  It might be a 
reasonable approach for determining the type of edge supports in a cell.

However, I've stood lots of blanks up on edge (on a rag, towel, or 
even a hard surface) in front of the light box and checked them for 
strain, and I can't say I've ever confirmed the presence of strain 
caused by sitting the mirror on its edge.  Some mirrors appear 
completely strain free when stood up on edge, even on a hard surface, 
so the test might not be sensitive enough to detect the strain induced 
when the mirror is sitting on its edge.
