Sounds like a poured blank like you are getting these days but
without the edge ground on the open side.  The backside has a
round raised section usually.
Just start grinding, making sure that the edge is properly
chamfered at all times and rough grind till you get the entire
surface out to the edge and to the shape you want.  The top side
usually produces the larger mirror surface area.
