My thinking is that a single mechanism for focusing and alignment can lead
to problems unless the two functions are absolutely independent of each
other. A case in point is the focusing and collimation of a  new commercial
cassigrain design where both functions are combined using three independent
stepper motors. The problem is that focusing and alignment aren't
independent. Focusing affects alignment. I have avoided this potential
problem by making the two function separate independent mechanisms.
