Jim, any one of these, including the Chinese will do for a basic Foucault
tester.  1" travel is good and as long as you remember to make your
readings with the tester always moving in the same direction you'll do
fine.  A dial indicator that reads to .0001 would be great except that
there always have a limited range, usually +/- .02 so that their
usefulness is limited.
