My suggestion is to find one with greater precision, like, 0.0001". That way you can build a Lateral Wire Tester instead! They didn't have that test 25 years ago. But now there's plenty about it in the archives. 

You can easily spherize with Foucault by putting a light and a knife on separate stands, so you can quickly align them. Later you can measure zones the old way, if you want, or the LWT way.
