Re: piezoelectric fiber composite as a dampening agent in tennis racquets - I'm not sure those sticks are still on the market anymore or if the fad hasn't passed them by completely. 
Re: KISS - you'll note that tennis players who do try to dampen string vibration use little rubbery buttons stuck down at the base of their string beds. Agassi just ties a rubber band across two strings.
Re: telescopes - I haven't tried tying rubber bands around my truss tubes. On my 20" f5.7 with 1 1/4" tubes, I press fit a notched light baffle between the tubes at about the 1/2 way point. Provides a) a probably unnecessary light baffle and b) a reduction of the effective length of the truss tubes, reducing vibration enormously.
