If you have a few bucks free, go to http://www.willbell.com and buy a
copy of "Best of ATM Journal". One of the articles that should be in
there is by Gary Friskorn (sp?). He did an off axis paraboloid by
stressed glass grinding and polishing. I don't recall any quantitative
statement about the accuracy of the finished product. He did have to
apply quite a lot of stress!
Also, the method that has been used many times for the production of
Schmidt corrector plates is a stressed glass method. Berhardt Schmidt
invented the method as well as the optical design. It is called the
vacuum pan method. (Do the commercial SCT outfits use the vacuum pan
method?)
