Waste heat may not necessarily be in the optical path with a cooled CCD.
If the cooled detector was behind an insulated window (especially if vacuum
is used as the insulator) and if the waste heat were carried via insulated
plumbing to a heat exchanger outside the optical path then there might not
be a heat issue. Constantan wire is a good material to make electrical
connections to the CCD and associated electronics because constantan is a
good electrical conductor but a relatively poor thermal conductor. Unlike
nichome which is also used for this purpose, constantan can be soldered.
