[ATM] re: Aluminate Glass
Really not a new process. Heads for acetylene torches can be purchased that
have a feed aperture in the head. The object is to slowly blow the powder
through the flame and have it deposited on a substrate. My experience with
it was hard facing components with tungsten carbide. I am sorry but I can't
remember the name of the company that made the equipment back in the 70s. GE
used this same technique for building up articles from silica (fused
silica). Today, with the availability of Hydrogen-Oxygen flame the sky is
the limit if you want to live dangerously. That itty bitty Hydrogen molecule
passes through a lot of materials like they were a sieve. It would be a real
challenge to build a mirror out of alumina - - - diamond tools all the way.
