Re: [ATM] photo supplies

I was hunting for a 35 mm motion picture camera and was horrified
to see that Ilford already has discontinued B&W movie reel. For
some time-lapse sequences, this film is just plain unbeatable. I
asked if maybe they would progress to larger formats (Imax, which
is currently trendy), thinking maybe I could afford/settle for 25 feet,
rather than standard 100/400 foot 35 mm reel. Ilford's shocking response
was to contact Kodak. Kodak price (custom order) was high enough to
send Bill Gates to the poorhouse and beyond any discussion within this
list. Kodak tried to convince me to go with common color stocks (no
thanks!). I really did have this idea to make a short B&W Imax-sized
sequence. The dream is disintegrating just as the scope is coming into
completion, even in 35 mm format.

I am not allergic to CCD, but could see the same fate for B&W CCD. There
is already a shortage of B&W CCDs. The majority of the market is
color. Perhaps AP specialists like Apogee/S-BIG and others will also
drop B&W CCD. After all, most of the folks on this list are not doing
photometry. If vendors make a compelling argument that their color
cameras make esthetically pleasing pics, most people would favor these
and B&W CCD cameras would not be worthy of stocking on shelves.
