The cameras of the smallest variety are 1/4" imagers that are used by those
medical cameras.  The problem that you really need to deal with is the heat
generated by the head's cooling system for the CCD.  Insulation and remote
depositing of the heat generated are what is needed to be done to make a
prime focus camera work right.
The camera chips are measured by the imaging size that would be used in a
vidicon (tube) camera for that size.  Thus a 1/4" CCD would have
approximately the same size imaging area as a 1/4" vidicon which is a round
tube.
Astro cameras generally haven't been built to be put in the prime focus of
the scope without problems.  The cameras generally havn't been built to
minimize the diameter of the whole package either.
