Hi Art,
I think that the problem with placing a ccd into the light path to replace
the secondary is going to hinge on controlling the heat generated.  Those
things get HOT.  Imagine putting that into the light path.  Should do
interesting things to the image, and the cooling equipment used now would
occupy more space than the typical diagonal does. Or maybe not. Why don't
you try it and let us know?
