[ATM] Re: ATM Newport conical blank?
Rob, I have a Newport conical blank. Sorry, didn't notice the thread
earlier, mine's 20". The back has a radii and could have been generated
from a thicker blank but don't know for sure. FWIW, I like it better than
the pure conical.
Mine is going in a Cass, so more of a reason to use one. It probably weighs
25 - 30 lbs, I can lift it without a problem.
To support it while grinding/polishing I cut 2x4s to the shape of the back.
Then put a thick layer of RTV (Silicon caulk) covered with a layer of
indoor/outdoor carpet. Put the mirror on top with spacers (the silicon
spacers used for tile work) around the edges so all the calk would not
squeeze out an let it sit for a few days.
Seems to work. I do rotate the mirror often to prevent print through...
For a Dob, I would just use a thin blank, don't think the conic offers an
advantage. To take the monkey off your back, I can answer questions if
anyone has any... It isn't the problem it appears to be.
