In truth, the slit width is really unimportant except as a light intensity
limiter for the testing. The reason I say this is that the ultimate wide
slit is the slitless tester setup where there is no second side to the slit
except for the edge of the light source. There is a minimum width but that
is very small, usually being in the area where the diffraction starts taking
over as the light source.
Basically, set the slit width to something in the .003-,010" width and be
happy. The wider the slit, the more the surface under test will dim before
the shadows really start appearing. The narrower the slit, the more the
slope of the dimming of the two limits of the light curve will tend to
resemble each other.
