John,
  Most of the reading I have seen suggests you leave
the same distance as the tube diameter but thats not a
golden rule, expecially when you have a huge primary,
the main thing is to prevent light from getting at the
bottom of the focuser, some have a mask or sheild they
attatch to the top,its all in you preference... but if
lenght is not a problem going atleast the 8" above the
secondary acts as a good light baffle.
