Image processing cannot, even theoretically, increase the amount
of information..what happens is that the processing alogorithms
emphasize one aspect on the image at the expense of other aspects.
For expense, a simple unsharp mask can reveal finer details but
you lose the true brightness values and linearity.

See http://www.spaceweather.com/ for Ed Grafton's C-14 picture of Mars
compared with a Hubble image at nearly the same time. HST's image
is sharper of course and is probably more linear in brightness,
but Ed's sharpened image does faithfully reproduce much of the
detail on the surface.
