My experience exactly! I replaced the batteries and
the led was much brighter. But then I replaced the led
with a bulb from a small maglight and the brightness
was greatly increased.
You can buy the bulbs at a hardware store. They also
use two AA or AAA batteries. I took the time to frost
them using some emery paper.
