There are a number of websites that describe the mirror making or grinding
process. Go find a few (there's two on my website) and read them and
compare them against each other for their weaknesses in description and
compile your own set of what you consider important.
The process is basically pretty simple (the Egyptians already knew how to
make flats from 3 pieces of material) and is more boring than anything else.
It only becomes exciting when you finally get that deligtfull paraboloid
surface.
The grits will be fine if the bottoms of the cans aren't rusted and a small
vacuum can take the grit out without picking up any rust that may be in the
bottom. You will need less than 1/4 of any of the finer grits to finish the
mirror.
