You have to remember that the Airy EP was a minor improvement on a primitive
EP and it was quickly put aside as soon as the concepts of crown and flint
glasses making a color corrected design.  Today, with the advent of actually
ray tracing designs, the actual start of a particular design can quickly go
through the principals that other EPs were originally designed to without
the specific knowledge of the operator of the software.  The big thing that
Airy seems to have done is curve the two lenses go more provide for the
advantagous error correction from those changes.
