Congratulations!  Something that few on the list have attempted.
For a spindle, you may want to go to my new page on spindles and grinding
machines for ideas on a nice machine size to grind small lenses like you
have done.  A motor turning a hundred rpm or a bit more will probably do
just fine.  You can always look at how fast that your drill was turning and
use that speed as near the max spped and put a speed controller onto a DC
motor to allow for slower work.
If you really want to have some fun, try using your Foucault tester to see
throguh the flat side of the glass and see what the shape of the curved
surface is.  You may be supprised at how crude it may be.
