I looked it up in the handbook ('80s edition) and it had only one page
on the subject. I couldn't make sense of the formulas there, using units
such as HP etc. I don't know how to convert. Someone did send me a formula
I can use though (thanks David). What I did find valuable in the book was
that it discussed taper angle. Using greased leather at least, below 8 deg.
it will tend to jam together and not release. Above 13 deg., spring
pressure may need to be too high. So assuming it will be similar with other
materials, this gives me a ballpark figure to start with.
I just did some experiments with different materials between two pieces
of stainless. I found milk jug almost as slippery as Teflon, and of course,
much tougher. That may be the way to go, assuming it has enough friction.
