I have seen other materials than Teflon used for cone clutches for smooth
operation. I have been using a Procunier tapping machine to tap many
thousands of 4-40 blind holes in somewhat gummy 6061-T6 aluminum. The
Procunier tapping machine uses a double cone clutch with a material more
like leather or cork, at least it appeared to have a much more friction
than Teflon. The tapping operation is very smooth. The tapper has no
overtravel (good thing with a blind hole). I think that would not be the
case with cold flowing Teflon.
