Vladimir,

For me, the reason is simple, avalibility.

Also, just to push Richard and Mutalib's button, I've always used AlO for
fine grinding and therefore it's the ONLY way it can be done.

I stopped trying to figure out the conversion years ago.  Somewhere I have
a chart showing the equivalences.  Someone else will likely post it long
before I even find the correct mess to look through.  For large glass, my
grit sequence is:  80, 120, 320, 400, 600, 17u or 15u, 9u, 5u, 3u.  I like
to go to 3u as it shortens the polishing time.  Though, I do need to be
careful about scratches at 3u.
