My 6 year old likes to watch Zoom on PBS.  So my wife tapes the shows for 
her.  Last week they had a short feature of a young girl making her own 
telescope,  a 10 inch Dob, classic Sidewalk style with the simple draw-tube 
sliding focuser.  I was impressed.  Showed mirror grinding, and the 
resulting aluminized mirror.  She also explained by using her scope,  how 
light from the stars gets to the eyepiece.  Then they showed her with her 
scope out on the sidewalk outside a shopping area, showing people the 
moon.  For many that's their first view of the moon thru a scope, they were 
excited.

Zoom encourages young people to send in Videos, Pictures or other ideas 
relating to science, problem solving, math etc.  These ideas become future 
shows.  Maybe that episode will encourage a few young people to build  a 
scope too...
