ATM Aluminum "stick" welding
Just finished doing a bit of aluminum welding with a special 1/8" rod.
(see my previous post on "going solar")
You must make sure that the area is absolutely clean by cleaning with
solvent,
brushing with a new stainless steel brush that is used ONLY for cleaning
aluminum
lest it contaminate the area, and having another go with the solvent.
My stock was 3/16" thick, I wouldn't try to weld much thinner using a
rod.
Ran 105 amps DC reverse. Note that these rods are very "sticky" (worse
even
than 7011) and the flux "heals" over the tip of the rod after each pass
so it is
necessary to drag the rod tip over a brick or other non-metallic abrasive
to expose
the metal core before another attempt is made.
Also note that the rods' flux will absorb moisture very quickly, ruining
them.
The rods must be stored in an airtight container (special "rod holders"
with gasketed,
screw on tops are available at your welding supply store.) I' recommend
tossing in a
silica gel packet as well.
Peace Be With Thee,
Tim Colbert K3HX
