Look at the strange words and they do tend to make sense if you figure out
what they are trying to say.  The various "machines" are actually chemical
feedback loops to control some aspect of the light conversion process.  They
call them machines because they tend to do things that machines do - process
something right there and feed back that info to the beginning of the
process.  Once you get past that part - the inappropiate use of words that
have common meanings to you and me - things tend to get to be a lot more
readable.
