ATM Real Time Automated Foucault Tester

I've followed the discussion of using a CCD camera when doing a Foucault
test with interest. I have several questions about the set-up.
1) can you use a normal AV (non digital) camcorder and just blow up the
image of your glass on a TV?
2) Some set-ups I've seen have the front lens "stepped down" with a mask and
a small central hole, what is the rational behind this, if any, and how is
the size of the hole calculated?
3) I assume the auto-focus and aperture controls should be adjusted
manually, are there any other adjustments to make?
