Yes, the weight is distributed, but not equally. The weight is
distributed because, the glass, the grit, etc. all deform slightly sort
of like springs in a bed to support the weight. 

Here's a thought experiment. Put the two pieces of glass on cushion. If
you move the top piece to one side the cushion will compress more in
that direction. If the forces were even shouldn't the cushion compress
evenly?
