Re: ATM Dented squares
>However, a few of the squares seem to be "dented"
Hello Michael,
I understand from off list that you used a lapmold. Dented squares almost
always result from the mold being pulled off too early or too fast -- the
mold clings to the still soft pitch and pulls up the sides of the facets,
leaving a slightly concave facet face. The way to avoid this is to let the
pitch cool for an hour or so before removing the mold, and pull off the mold
slowly.
Pressing the lap with some netting between it and the mirror is an easy way
to fix the problem. The netting provides an escape route for air that would
otherwise become trapped. For un-denting, I would use thick screen door
fly-netting, rather than bridal veil. It's best not to polish with dented
facets, since the lap can suddenly "suction cup" to the surface, causing
jumps, skips, and other annoying behaviors.
