I think that they are using a standard for the signal.  I do believe that
the interface is a fairly standard version of either the parallel port or
the serial port.  The cable may cost about as much as the caliper
(considering the HF prices) but doesn't have any fancy electronics inside
the cable.  The software is also going to be a problem unless you can find
some shareware version of the stuff on the web.
The message is a long string of digits that describe the absolute position
of the slider.
