The temperature at which you work with a lap can change the actions of the
pitch radically.  You may want to work in a cooler area  to get the pitch to
move less.  It only takes a few degrees to change the temper of the pitch.
To get pitch to handle higher temps before it starts to flow quickly, you
can indeed boil it for a bit.  Pull a piece and verify how much it has
changed it's temp and if it goes too far, some turpentine will change it's
temp range in the other direction.
