Asking the question on the list is a lot better for all because the post
then goes into the archives of the ATMlist and thus everybody in the future
can see what the whole thread is.  Andrew's question was:

The carriage moves twice as far (guess why) for the fixed version but that
really doesn't mean that much as the measurement error is going to be larger
than the resolution of even a cheap dial indicator will measure.  Whether
the error band from not being able to see the difference in the shadow on
the mirror is .004" or .008", the dial indicator is going to measure that
difference quite accurately.
