Andrew, if you want to make things easy for yourself, grab your camcorder
and see if you can get the front surface of the lens within that inch or so
(it's input aperture is a lot larger than your eye so it can be put back
further than the eye) and, if everything works our well, it will focus on
the mirror and show you nice and steadily what the tester is showing you.  I
use a little security camera (running about $50 or so on eBay now as well as
the electronics surplus houses) for testing (one of the image on my front
page is me and another guy doing a Foucault test with a rather more
expensive camera).
