When you go for the plastic, you want the Ruby Red stuff. I use either the
vinyl sheets (about 1/32" thick) or have used some of the old stuff that PCB
board makers used for layout of the boards. One layer is often enough and
the red is properly deep enough that it will filter white light enough to be
a deeper red than a typical red LED of the same brightness.
