Steve, Rather than use a lighter wood have you considered removing some
wood from your existing box. You can draw a pattern on it, keeping strength
in mind, then cut out all the unnecessary wood with a jig saw.
Alternatively, use a circle cutter to cut large holes in the box, to create
a pleasing pattern and reduce the weight. You can buy a circle cutter at
the hardware store that will fit in a drill press or hand drill and cut up
to 6" circles. It is a very handy tool for a telescope maker to have.

A word of warning! Keep your fingers away. They stick out further than you
might think and they can flick the skin off your knuckles in the blink of
an eye.
