This is probably what's called chamois, though pronounced "shammy" in
English.  Originally, it was a specially treated leather made from the
skin of a mountain goat of the same name, but most chamois is now
synthetic -- as you say, much of it is sold for cleaning windows and
final polishing a freshly washed car.

Be sure to keep this stuff off your polished glass surface, though, at
least the leather version; the special properties are due to oils worked
into the leather and the oil could be deposited on your glass.
