I use the stuff for wiping-dry windows after cleaning, or in cyclist trousers as sweat absorber. These are normally made of leather (don't know the english name for it: in dutch it's called zeemleer), but there is also the imitation fabric which has a much better defined thickness (appr. 1mm). It is slightly spongy and, when wet, serves as a very good anti-slip mat. It works so well that for my 10" mirror i don't need additional clamps during the polishing. Also it's cheap enough to waste it when moving to finer grits.
