ATM F2 Prolate Mirror, why?

Hi folks;

Over at the Chabot telescope workshop Friday nite, there was a gentleman
who had a 12" mirror someone had given him. F2, large center
perforation, and with a definite oblate spheroid figure. None of us
could come up with an explanation, other than "it must be some military
thing...

Anyone have any ideas as to what its original application may of been??
